Another Successful Beach Trip - submitted by Chuck Hunt

Well we did it again. The weather was just great the first day with very little wind, lots of sun and a great time for collecting. There were thirty-plus members and guests on the trip. There were not many gravel beds opened, but the members did get some Newport Blue agates, fossils and a couple of more unusual or elusive things on this trip! Joe Start got three whale vertebrae in situ! It was a great find. Our own Zach Abbas found an agate arrowhead and Sandy Wissinger found a shark’s tooth. There were a lot of unusual, but neat finds.

Saturday evening found thirty-plus members at the Sizzler for some “show and tell” and the replenishing of some calories. Sunday dawned and it was pouring down rain, wind and very cool as a cold front moved into the coast. A couple of us spent some time on the beach Sunday digging at the fossil skeleton site again and then it was back home in the rain. Also, I did dig up a fossil crab, so it was a pretty good weekend. I hope everyone else had as much fun as I did.

WAMS at the Oregon State Fair - September 04
Submitted by George Goetzelman

Again this year the Oregon State Fair has reserved a booth for Willamette Agate at no cost to us.
For several years we have had member volunteers man this space for one day of the fair. Divided into
three shifts, our member answered questions that the inquiring visitors to our booth put to us. They kept us busy throughout the day and into the evening. Ted & Gerry Silver and Kit Leshk came in early to help with the set-up. Kit has done his share of tumbling rock and is very knowledgable on same. Ted Silver brought in his Diamond Genie and demonstrated the art of cutting cabochons. Ted has the know how and has earned him the position of master teacher of lapidary. The next shift brought in Lucille Sams and
Chuck & Barb Hunt. Chuck took over where Ted left off and Barb answered tumbling questions that the visitors put to her. Lucille who is knowledgable on all phases of lapidary worked along side with Aaron Currier who brought in his fossils and answered all about fossils from the coast. Mick Edwards also was there relating some of his stories to the enjoyment of the visitors.

All of the volunteers did a magnificent job and I do believe they enjoyed themselves in the process. All volunteers worked over on their assigned shifts. As coordinator of this project, I want to thank all who participated in this venture. Lets do it again next year.

WAMS 2004 Picnic - August 8

Thanks to Tom and Susan Robertson for hosting the Annual WAMS Picnic held on Sunday, August 8th. The picnic was well attended - though nobody got an exact count. It was a hot, sunny day, but the trees and canopies provided plenty of shade. The club provided fried chicken and sodas and everyone brought along a side dish or dessert - lots of good food. It was a great time to socialize and catch up with other members on summer field trips and life in general.

A few games of Rocky Bingo was played with most everyone participating for the rock prizes (thanks Rudy for retuning the Rocky Bingo program and printing more out). Several members also brought rocks along for trade/sale. I decided this would be a good opportunity to try to get rid of some of our rocks that are collecting in buckets and shelves in our garage. Although I brought all but a couple back home again, it was fun going through the rocks we had collected over the past eight years.

When you start collecting (and even now for me) you tend to pick up rocks that you maybe should have left behind - new rocks become your favorites and the older material is moved to the side. plus those rocks and fossils at the silent auctions you wouldn’t give up on, the slabs for 25¢ that you know would make wonderful cabs and of course all those gems you see at rock shows that have to come home with you. Another fun thing about going through the rocks is finding those nice ones that you had forgotten all about - like a handful of Holly Blue Agate or the pieces of the soccer-sized geode I found at Thistle Creek on one of my first field trips.

Thanks to Sandy Wissinger for organizing the picnic. She did a great job! You too Chris.
